[ week 5, wednesday ]
... this is probably a trap.
[Jae-ha knows that, even as he looks up and finds a throwing knife lodged into one of the pillars in the castle. He continues to stare, and stare, and stare... but he also recognizes it as his knife. Or even if it isn't his knife, it's finally a weapon that he knows how to use.
So he's still caught between his choices.
When Evan walks by, he'll glance over and wave him down - ]
Tell me, am I seeing things? Do you notice anything up there?
[pointing up at the pillar...]

I see it, it’s... a knife. [...] You, you don’t think anyone got hurt, do you?
no subject
[hE'D LIKE TO NOT BE FRAMED FOR MURDER]
But if you can see it, that means it's not just an illusion for me... Then - I'm going to retrieve it, but if anything happens to me, would you mind going to get help?
[he's still
so casual about this]
no subject
That's... I-Isn't that really dangerous?! Do you, you want help or anything...?
no subject
[so much confidence - and a smile to boot!!]
I can reach it no problem, I just want to make sure I have a backup plan if something goes wrong once I do.
no subject
Um, okay. As, as long as you're sure.
no subject
[stop just deciding that you're siblings, jae-ha
but regardless he'll tap his right leg on the ground a few times before bending at the knee and then pushing himself off - apparently he's still got hops!! his jump launches him into the air higher than a human would normally be capable of, but as promised he manages to reach the knife without issue
which means
it's bubble time for the both of them!]
- what?
no subject
[He watches with surprise as Jae-Ha jumps, but that surprise only grows when he finds himself encased in the bubble with him. Immediately, he tries to press himself against the edge, and when that doesn't work:]
Don't, um, be careful not to touch me. You'll, you'll get stuck.
no subject
[he's actually perfectly fine with like. physical touch, but he'll try to agree with what evan wants
- up until the memory begins to play. Jae-ha is taken back to that moment all over again, and Evan can feel the emotions that he endured. the frustration at being caught and caged down, the burning ache for freedom despite it all, and then the final throbbing worry that maybe what he's being told is true, that maybe there's still nothing for him in the outside world
even if in the end, that still dies down in the face of but what if.
jae-ha blinks it away, surprised like he'd been brought back to a state that he hadn't thought about in a very, very long time]

As it ends, he turns to Jae-Ha to say something, but he doesn't have time before something else begins... A February night when he was much younger, only seven. It's clear from the the sadness and uncertainty he's feeling as his mother tucks him into bed that something important has happened recently, though it isn't discussed for several minutes. It's only made clear what's going on when he speaks, soft and scared, asking her whether she's going to leave the same way his father did only hours before.
As soon as she takes his hand, promising she isn't going anywhere... It ends. The bubble pops, leaving them both standing there, and Evan freezes as he looks over at Jae-Ha. He isn't certain what to say, just yet.]

Jae-ha didn't have a family of the conventional sort - didn't know what it was like to lose a parent until he was caught in this horrifying game - but he felt the fear. The worry of a child, and even though Evan is much older now, grown in front of him -
Jae-ha reaches out to place a hand on his shoulder.]
... you're loved - and anyone who would choose to leave you and your family is a fool.
no subject
Instead, he shakes his head immediately, not commenting on his own experience or what Jae-Ha's said.]
Why did he... have you locked down there? That's, that's awful, I don't...
no subject
... one of the other Green Dragons got away. We all have this leg, you know, that'll take us to the heavens if we want. We can go anywhere we'd like - but one of them got caught. The village paid for their mistakes.
So every Green Dragon after that - because they're born one after the other - was locked up to keep the village safe.
It wasn't just me.
no subject
[He frowns.]
no subject
[Sighs.]
... it's the type of power that people would want, where I come from. The wars are incessant and if you have power, that means you can use that power to take control of other people. It's an ugly fact... but that's the type of reasoning why the power has to be hidden away.
no subject
...Did you, um, did you get out eventually, or...?
no subject
[He nods.]
I made my escape, traveled the country that I always wanted to see, and eventually found a new place to belong. A place that I chose.
no subject
...I'm really, um, really glad. You deserve it. And - nobody stopped you this time?
